Student and Family Enrichment

The student and family enrichment department is designed to develop partnerships that promote successful recovery for our students and healthy lives for their families. You are not the cause of your loved ones addiction, you cannot control it and you cannot cure it but you can be empowered by support, education and communication.

Family Weekends

In an effort to increase opportunities and growth for our families as well as clarify our training credit policies, Family Day is expanding to include events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Family Day Registration

Please register online or call/email a representative from the SAFE department to let us know you’re planning on attending.

In addition, your student must also contact his or her counselor to apply for a pass.

We understand that an important component of family recovery and healing is regular visitation with your loved one. In order to better equip our families for these visits and for continued success after your loved one’s time with us, we ask that families participate in our training program in advance of each pass. Passes are available to students in our Long-Term Program. Clients in our Short-Term and Detox programs are not eligible for passes or visits but we strongly encourage families to take advantage of Family Weekends.

Visitation times are offered on the same day as our Family Day trainings each month (usually the last Saturday of the month with the exception of holidays and special events). Pass/visitation time begins at the conclusion of the training session and ends at 8:00 PM. In order to receive a pass, families and students must meet the following criteria: 1) Families must attend the training offered on the day of the intended pass 2) Families must RSVP for the training session through the Student and Family Enrichment (SAFE) Department at least one week prior to the training/pass date 3) Students must submit a pass contract to their counselor at least one week prior to the training/pass date.

At least one member of the family must be present for the training. Additional family members are allowed to join the student for the pass as long as at least one representative has been present for the training session. Family members must be listed and approved ahead of time through the pass contract submitted by the student to his counselor. Family members interested in attending the training must also be listed on the RSVP submitted to the SAFE department.

Credits for visitation are available to families who cannot attend the trainings in person and qualify for our DVD Program. Please see the “DVD Program” section below for more details.

Families must be present at check in in order to receive credit for the training. Check in will close promptly at 10:00 AM. If you are running late and will miss the check-in time, you must call our front desk at 717-933-4181 ext. 1200. Unannounced late arrivals or families who miss the training will not be granted pass privileges that day. Multiple late arrivals will impact the approval of the student’s future pass requests.

We understand that there may be factors which would prevent or make it difficult for a family to attend a training during the morning of a pass date. In lieu of the training, we offer a DVD Program that is available to families who meet the following criteria:

  • Family lives further than two hours away from Rehrersburg
  • Work schedule interferes with training time
  • Family has small children and has difficulty arranging childcare
  • Physical or health limitations
  • Travel limitations

These training DVDs are available on an as-needed basis or by subscription (which will be distributed once-per-month). Families will be sent a copy of the training as well as a worksheet which will need to be completed by a family member and submitted to the SAFE department at least one week in advance of a pass. To request a one-time DVD or to be added to the subscription list, you must submit a request through your student’s counselor or recovery coach. Passes will be scheduled for regular Family Day Saturdays but may be rescheduled for alternate Saturdays upon special approval of the student’s counselor/recovery coach and the Clinical Programing Director.

The dining hall area will be available to families until 4:00 PM on Family Days. Students who have just transferred to Rehrersburg are not allowed to take an off campus pass until they have been at the Rehrersburg site for at least a month. Students who have been granted off-campus passes may come and go with you from the Dining Hall throughout the afternoon. You are welcome to bring snacks and games with you during this time.

No. We currently present a rotation of fourteen different trainings. Training topics will be scheduled and announced prior to Family Day each month.

On rare occasions, passes may be granted on Saturdays other than Family Day. These special circumstances must be arranged through your loved one’s recovery coach and with the approval of the Clinical Programing Director.

While there is no childcare provided during the training, we do provide an area for children to retreat with a guardian if they become restless.

A member of your party must remain with the child at all times.

In order to earn credit for the training you or an additional family member must be present for the entire presentation.

We recommend bringing family or friends to assist you with your child should you decide to bring them along.

We also suggest that parents use discretion when bringing children to the trainings as some of them feature drug and alcohol-related content that may not be appropriate for young children.

Yes. We encourage you to continue attending Family Day for as long as you are able. While some of our training material will repeat, we hope that you will still find value in the fellowship you’ll find here with other Teen Challenge families.

It is also our desire to continue to serve you as a staff, offer you support and answer any questions you may have moving forward.

If you plan on attending as an Alumni Family, please remember to RSVP to the SAFE department and let us know if you would like to continue receiving invitations each month.

We understand that you may have questions or concerns about these policies. Please feel free to contact your student’s counselor or recovery coach. You may also contact the SAFE department at 717-933-2813, ext. 1113 or email Carol Foschini at Carol.Foschini@teenchallengetc.com.
